Escaping a reading slump is no small feat, or so it feels when you’re in the thick of it. We all know that beginning a new book and getting hooked is often the most challenging part. But what if nothing seems to do the trick? Here are some tips on when that frustrating reading-slump strikes..
Don’t Feel Guilty
Feeling guilty about not reading only ever adds to the slump. Life gets busy, and it’s okay to have periods where reading takes a back seat. Let go of the guilt and remind yourself that reading is a pleasure, not a chore. When you’re ready, your books will be waiting!
Try a Change
Sometimes a simple change of genre can work wonders. If you’re stuck in a particular genre, explore something new and different. Whether it’s a thriller, romance, fantasy, or non-fiction, a fresh genre might reignite your reading enthusiasm.
Try an Audiobook
If sitting down with a physical book feels daunting, consider audiobooks. They allow you to enjoy a story while doing other activities like driving to work, going for a walk, or even relaxing with your eyes closed.
Join a Book Club
Connect with fellow readers by joining a book club. Discussing a book with others can provide fresh perspectives, and the sense of community may motivate you to dive back into the literary world. If having to read a certain book in a certain timeframe puts you off even more; why not join a virtual reading group? There are many of these on Facebook or Goodreads, allowing you to dip in and out as you please!
Revisit your Favourites
Even if you are not a fan of re-reading, why not re visit an old favourite author? The comfort of a familiar writing style might be just what you need to ease back into the joy of reading!
Graphic Novels All The Way!
My personal favourite option for when I am struggling to get stuck into a new book is to reach for a graphic novel instead. Less daunting and a lot more visual, this could be what you need to get you back into a regular reading pattern!
